Post-natal physiotherapy
Your recovery powered by Physio Action
Recovering at Your Own Pace
Pregnancy and childbirth put real strain on your body, and it's common to be left with weakened pelvic floor muscles, abdominal separation, or aches and pains you didn't have before. Our post-natal physiotherapy helps you recover properly — not just "get by" — so you can get back to doing the things you enjoy, safely and with confidence. Pelvic floor muscles are almost always affected by pregnancy and childbirth, so the earlier you start rehabilitation, the better. As the demands on your body change — carrying your baby, feeding, broken sleep, lifting a growing toddler — new aches and pains often appear too, and we treat those as they come up.
What is Post-Natal Physiotherapy?
- Pelvic floor rehabilitation: tailored exercises to rebuild strength and function, addressing incontinence, heaviness or weakness.
- Abdominal & core recovery: assessment and treatment for abdominal muscle separation (diastasis recti), with a plan to close the gap and rebuild core strength.
- Pain relief & rehab: treatment for the back, pelvic, upper back and neck pain that often follows birth — much of it linked to feeding, carrying and disturbed sleep.
We also offer post-natal checks and diastasis assessments, commonly booked alongside or after your 6–8 week GP check.
What's Included in Post-Natal Physiotherapy?
Depending on what you need, your treatment plan may include:
- Abdominal and core strengthening
- A tailored pelvic floor exercise programme
- Scar tissue management, following a caesarean or perineal tear
- Manual therapy for back, neck and shoulder pain
- Practical advice on posture, sleep and nutrition to support recovery
If you'd like a single, structured assessment covering your abdominal muscles, pelvic floor and posture in one session, our Mummy MOT is designed for exactly that.
Who Needs Post-Natal Physiotherapy?
Post-natal physiotherapy is for anyone recovering from pregnancy and childbirth — whether that was weeks or years ago. It's worth booking in if:
- You've noticed signs of incontinence or pelvic floor weakness
- You've noticed a tummy gap (abdominal separation)
- You're experiencing back, pelvic, neck or shoulder pain since having your baby
- You want guidance getting back to exercise safely
It's never too late to address postnatal issues — many of the mums we see are years, not weeks, post-birth.
When to Book Post-Natal Physiotherapy
You can book any time after birth. Many mums come in around their 6–8 week GP check, but earlier is fine if something doesn't feel right, and it's just as worthwhile later if you're only now finding time to address it.
